Dahlias
Dahlias are the highlight of the late summer garden. Keep picking them and one dahlia tuber will produce hundreds of flowers.
The dahlia flower is characterised by the rings its petals. There is great variation among the different species of dahlia in regards to the size, height, colour, petal shape, and number of rows of petals. Some smaller dahlias grow 1 to 3 feet with flowers 2 to 4 inches in diameter. Larger dahlias grow up to 6 feet with flowers up to 12 inches in diameter. The dahlia's flowers can be white, yellow, orange, red, pink or purple and are either solid or patterned with different coloured stripes or edges. The petals of different varieties of dahlias can be long or short, pointed or round, uniformly or irregularly spaced or curl at the edges.
